In Literacy This Year We Will:
*Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print * Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds + long and short vowels * Produce single-syllable words by blending sounds * Isolate and pronounce beginning, medial, and final sounds * Segment single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds * Apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words + digraphs * Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for long vowel sounds * Read words with inflectional endings * Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words * Read with accuracy, expression, and fluency to support comprehension * Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding *Ask and answer questions about key details, and to clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text(fiction and nonfiction) * Retell key details and understand the main idea/message (fiction and nonfiction) * Describe characters, setting, major events (beginning, middle, ending) * Identify words/phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings * Explain major differences between fiction (books that tell stories) and nonfiction (books that give information) * Identify the narrator (who is telling the story at various points in a text) * Use illustrations and details in a story to describe it's characters, setting, or events * Compare/Contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories * (With support) read poetry * Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text * Know and use various text features (headings, table of contents, glossaries) to locate key facts or information in a text * Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by words in a text * Use illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas * Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text * Identify basic similarities in and differences between to texts on the same topic |
